(WBNG Binghamton) During the 2010 Healthy Heart campaign, WBNG is sharing tips and information to prevent heart disease and maintain a healthy heart.
Action News Reporter Caitlin Nuclo and Weis Markets nutritionist Karen Buch have this weeks Healthy Bite.
Viva Italia. The key to heart healthy may just be to eat more Italian cuisine. Weis Markets registered dietitian Karen Buch is here to reveal more about the Italian culinary secrets to longevity. Thank you for being with us Karen.
"Oh, Thank you Caitlin. And you know Italian food who doesn't love it. But its also a good way to love your heart."
"And now what kids of Italian food are you talking about?" asked Caitlin.
"Well its not the Alfredo sauce you might be thinking but it's the basics you know the Mediterranean diet. We're looking at pasta. If you can choose a whole grain version that's great because one study recently showed that men who choose more whole grains are nineteen percent more likely to reduce their blood pressure than those that didn't, so look for whole grain pasta if you can," said Karen.
"And we can't forget about the tomatoes?" asked Caitlin.
"And tomatoes are another great part of it. Full of lycopene and potassium of course so and you know when you drizzle with a little bit of olive oil it helps the absorption of that healthy lycopene into your system," said Karen.
"Now where does a glass of red wine fit in?" asked Caitlin.
"Isn't it nice that fits in there? Yeah the Mediterranean diet is key that folks drink red wine but of course concord grape juice supplies a lot of that same antioxidant resveratrol which we know helps to keep your arteries nice and clear and flexible." said Karen.
Well there is something to raise a glass to. Thank you Karen. And for more healthy heart tips pick up volume 41 of Healthy Bites Magazine at our Weis Markets stores or online at www.weismarkets.com
