NY Senate Votes to Expel Monserrate Immediately

(WBNG Binghamton) The New York State Senate votes to immediately expel a Senator convicted of assault.

The Senate voted 53 to 8 Tuesday night to oust Hiram Monserrate after hours of debate behind closed doors in Albany.

The Queens Democrat was convicted of dragging his girlfriend through his apartment lobby.

Monserrate was acquitted of a felony, which would have automatically cost him his job.

His expulsion weakens the Democrat power in the Senate.

They are left with a 1-vote majority.

Monserrate says he will fight the expulsion.
