(WBNG Binghamton) Despite economic downturn, support for local arts is still going strong.

Tuesday, the Broome County Arts Council awarded about $300,000 in grants to 18 non-profit arts organizations in the area.

Some of the recipients include Southern Tier Celebrates, Cider Mill Playhouse and Tri-Cities Opera.

The Arts Council says some of the money will be used to pay rent and keep the lights burning in the theatre, as well as to produce specific projects throughout the county.

"We managed to raise $355,944 for the arts this year. That's 98% of the goal. That means this community really appreciates what the arts do for them," said Sharon Ball with the Broome County Arts Council.

Ball also says last year, about 50,000 volunteer hours were spent working with non profit groups.
