Celebrating Irish Roots

Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A historic elementary school celebrates its Irish roots.

St. Patrick's School in Owego marks St. Patrick's Day every year with a parade.

Its principal says it's in honor of the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the country.

It's also in honor of the school's founders, who were Irish.

"Any year that the weather cooperates the parade has gone on, and the students are encouraged to wear as much green as they can and to celebrate. It's our way of sharing with the community who we are, and thank them for supporting St. Patrick's School," said Principle Paula Smith.

St. Patrick's opened 150 years ago, in 1859.
