Firm Looks To Expand in Binghamton Area

September 3, 2010 Updated Sep 3, 2010 at 1:48 PM EST

A firm which currently treats waste water in Western New York is looking to expand in to Broome County.

Saltwater Solutions operates a plant in Livingston County.

It breaks down chemicals in brine from a collapsed salt mine.

But if natural gas drilling is permitted here, it would look to build a plant to treat frack fluid.

The firm says the chemicals in the salt mine brine are the same as those found in residual hydrofracking fluid.

Saltwater Soultions is looking at two possible locations now in Binghamton.

It says it has successfully tested its technology with the DEP in Pennsylvania.

"This is proven technology. It eliminates one of the myths that there's no way to treat frack waste water." said Jay Smith of Saltwater Solutions.

The company sells broken-down salt from brine for water softener and animal feed.

It would do the same if it expanded to the Southern Tier.
