Town of Barton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A Republican Candidate for New York's Governor says digging into the Marcellus Shale is an opportunity that can't be passed up.
Rick Lazio met with voters and others at Cary's Ice Cream in Tioga County.
Lazio is a former US Congressman from Long Island.
He won the Republican nomination for New York Governor in June.
Lazio will face Carl Paladino in the Republican primary September 14th.
He says natural gas drilling is the greatest economic opportunity the Southern Tier has ever had as long as it's done responsibly.
"My number one focus is going to be creating more jobs throughout the Central and Southern Tier. We've got to do that by lowering our taxes, lowering our energy costs, which are 70 percent above the national average. We need to take advantage of a great employment opportunity in Marcellus Shale," said Lazio.
Andrew Cuomo is on the Democrat ticket for Governor.
A recent Quinnipiac poll shows he has a 57 to 25 lead over Lazio.
