NY SAFE Act assault weapons registrations begin

April 15, 2013 Updated Apr 15, 2013 at 3:11 PM EDT

(WBNG Binghamton) Two provisions of the New York SAFE Act start Monday.

Owners of assault weapons must register those weapons. The law sets a stricter definition of an assault weapon to include semi-automatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and at least one military style feature. People who possessed assault weapons prior to April 15, 2012 have until April 15, 2014 to register and must recertify every five years.

The SAFE Act also sets a restriction on how many bullets can be loaded into a magazine. 10 round magazines remain legal in New York. However, owners may only load up to 7 rounds. There is an exception at recognized firing ranges.

Information about assault weapons registration, forms and magazine restrictions can be found on the New York State Police website.
