NY Senate Eases Sexting Law

July 22, 2010

Albany, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The State Senate voted to lessen the penalties for so called sexting.

That would include sending sexually explicit text messages or images.

If the messages are sent between two consenting minors, less than four years apart in age.

Those caught would not be considered sex offenders.
The Assembly is considering a similar bill.

Lawmakers say it's unfair to put a child on the sex offender registry for doing something stupid like sending pictures of themselves to a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Prosecutors say it's unlikely cases between consenting minors would even be prosecuted under the new laws.

Punishment would then be left up to the parents.
