New York City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) New York City's Department of Environmental Protection has completed two upstate Wastewater treatment plants, including one in Delaware County.
The work on the wastewater plants in Grahamsville in Sullivan County and Margaretville in Delaware County included upgrades and safety improvements.
The two city owned wastewater plants got $7.4 million in improvements.
The upgrades are designed to help protect the water quality in the Delaware River watershed, which supplies more than half of the city’s one billion gallons of daily drinking water needs.
The treatment plants will now use ultraviolet light to kill disease causing organism in the water put back into the river after treatment, instead of using chemicals.
The Margaretville Wastewater Treatment Plant serves about 1,300 residents.
The improvements will help New York City continue to supply its water without having to filter it first.
All five of the city-owned wastewater treatment plants in the upstate area now use the ultraviolet disinfection process.
In addition to removing the chemicals from the wastewater plant output, using ultraviolet light also reduces the overall operating costs of the plants.
New York City has invested $1.5 billion in watershed protection programs since 1997.
