Natural Gas Extraction Slows in NY

Lower energy prices are pushing natural gas companies to slow production.

A report released by the state Department of Environmental Conservation shows gas production in New York dropped 11% from 2008 to 2009.

Over the same period, the total value of natural gas dropped 57%.

The DEC says the price drop caused companies to hold off on extracting gas until prices go back up.

Production is still high, though. The DEC says wells produced nearly 45-billion cubic feet of natural gas last year. That's the sixth highest production year ever.

A good chunk of that production comes from established wells in Chenango County.

Gas extraction in New York is currently limited to conventional methods. The state has a moratorium on hydrofracking.
