September Is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Local organizations emphasize the importance of cancer awareness.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo presented a state proclamation to the American Cancer Society and SHARE.Declaring September 2010 as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

SHARE is a non-profit group that provides support for women effected by ovarian and breast cancers.

An organizer says the groups hope the month of awareness will lead to early detections and a better understanding of the disease.

"It's key that people are educated and understand the symptoms of ovarian cancer. They are very generic, it's abdominal pain, and bloating. It might be urinary frequency or urgency. You might feel very full after eating a light meal." said Cheryl Kurosky

SHARE also provides support through an ovarian cancer hotline.

You can call 1-866-53-SHARE you will be provided ith information and have a chance to talk a survivor of ovarian cancer.
