Tentative Deal On SUNY Tuition Changes

July 30, 2010 Updated Jul 30, 2010 at 6:28 AM EST

State lawmakers have reached a tentative deal on changes to tuition rules for state universities.

An official says leaders in the state Assembly and Senate agree on legislation that would allow SUNY and CUNY schools to set planned tuition increases for the next 3 to 5 years.

Current figures would increase tuition 2% this fall on all campuses, then 4% per year after that.

The revenue from those tuition increases would go to the schools themselves rather than the state, and Albany could not cut funding to compensate.

The legislation would also set up a capital borrowing fund for the four largest schools in the SUNY system to build new education buildings and dorms. Those are Albany, Buffalo, Stony Brook, and Binghamton.

Insiders say if Paterson approves of the plan, it will go to the Legislature Tuesday for a vote.
