Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The 2013 Broome County budget proposal was released today.

Republican County Executive Debbie Preston calls for reduced spending to gradually chop down the county's debt.

Preston said she reduced staff and improved scheduling in the security division which will deliver a recurring annual savings of about $370,000.

She also cut her own salary.

"When I ran last year I promised to cut my own salary and the salary of my appointees by five percent. It wasn't popular with everyone. But I believed that good managers lead by example," said Preston.

"I think this administration has shown again and again they're more concerned with style over substance. So it was a good speech, but the devil's going to be in the details. I mean they've had a consistent pattern of misrepresenting the facts and misleading the public," said Tarik Abdelazim, candidate for Broome County Executive.

The proposed budget now goes to the county legislature for consideration.
