(WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton City Council is looking to finalize a plan for development in the heart of downtown. Monday night, the council wrapped up the discussion regarding the details of the corridor zoning plan for Main and Court streets. Council members said previous zoning ordinances made construction confusing for developers or home renovators. With this update, council members say developers will have new guidelines that are more easily understood when building in the city. Councilmembers said Monday this zoning ordinance will help advance the city's growth and preserve its historical value. "It really helps maintain a lot of the integrity and (history) of our respective neighborhoods in the corridor," said Councilwoman Lea Webb. "It also puts and moves us further into the 21 century to make sure that we are encouraging more development." The next step is to have a public hearing next month, and the city expects to adopt the new plan by September.
