Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Drums hit their beats, horns hit their notes, and marching band members hit their strides crossing the Court Street bridge Monday morning. All of it was part of downtown Binghamton's 54th Annual Columbus Day Parade. Emcee and member of the Son's of Italy Joe Leombrone said all of the effort putting the parade together was for one reason. "It's all for our heritage, that's what it's for," Leombrone said. A thousand or more showed up for the annual parade. Many came to see the nine marching bands including schools from as far away as Mexico, New York. "You see the bands in competition," Leombrone said. "Which is what you come to see." Johnson City High School senior and drum major Chelsea Burdick said months of preparation go into the parade. "It takes a lot of effort and hard work," Burdick said. "At first it's really hard, but we all come together and get it done." Unlike a football game, Burdick said a parade puts the music center stage. "I feel like the crowd gets more into it and they actually appreciate it more," she said. For the winning bands, it's bragging rights. Whitney Point High School drum major and majorette Chris Carey and Catelyn Allabaugh said they were surprised to take two trophies home. "We'll know that we got our trophies and it's going to feel good," Casey said. "I agree with Chris 100 percent," Allabaugh added. For all musicians like Johnson City High School drum majorette and junior Cassandra Domingo, it's the day to shine. "This is just pure music and fun, and happiness," Domingo said. The Columbus Day Parade was sponsored by the Downtown Binghamton Business Association and Mirabito Energy Products.
