Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Cyclists at the 2013 Chris Thater Memorial cycling race will have the greatest chance of being drug tested than ever before.
New York state was first to sign a RaceClean contract with USA Cycling.
The program guarantees drug tests will be administered more frequently throughout the year.
RaceClean is a USA Cycling-sponsored program and makes it much more likely to have testing at a big event
The Chris Thater Memorial Race is one of the top 20 criterium races in the country. Criterium races are typically short courses, often run on closed-off city center streets.
"It's a big step forward in having a level playing field across all of our racers," said NYS Bicycling Racing Association President Jeffrey Poulin. "In today's times its very important to have people out there racing thinking they can race clean, and know that they can succeed."
Racers who sign up for this race agree to be tested, but the cycling association has not been to this race to test in years.
"For the average fan or spectator," said race Director Chris Marion. "They really won't see a difference other than knowing that the winners are truly winning based on their skills. We're really maintaining the integrity of the event."
The Chris Thater Memorial Races are Aug. 24 and 25. This year marks the 30th year of the event.
