Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton High School is ranked among the most challenging high schools in America. A Washington Post columnist put nearly 2,000 public schools to the test, and Binghamton made the list.
For a school to be placed on the Most Challenging list, it must have a combination of advanced placement classes and a high number of graduates.
This year Binghamton High is ranked 693 out of 1,900 public schools.
The school's ranking considers the number of tests given, but not how well students do on those tests.
The high school's principal says students are applying themselves in more challenging classes.
"We have a good solid group of students who are working very hard," said Roxie Oberg. "They see the future, are being challenged and are challenging themselves to do well. We want to continue and expand that group."
Oberg says budget restraints and distractions outside the school environment are among the top challenges Binghamton High faces. She adds diversity is the most outstanding aspect of the school.
"We know that students come with issues outside the classroom that they bring with them as well and we work hard to help students meet those needs," Oberg said. "To develop the skills they need to be able to meet challenging courses."
The rankings only consider public schools because its main goal is to identify schools that do the best job in persuading average students to take college-level courses and tests.
Public schools nationwide are ranked according to the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school, divided by the number of graduating seniors at the school.
This is the eighth consecutive year Binghamton High School has made the list.
