Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Volunteers from Operation Christmas Child kicked off their National Collection Week Monday. They hope to collect more than nine million gift-filled shoe boxes this year.

"We are collecting shoe boxes that will be sent out all over the world to boys and girls that may not have a Christmas," said Heidi Morgan, Collection Center Coordinator. "And this will give them a Christmas and show Christ's love."

Volunteers set up shop at the Calvary Community Church in Johnson City. Just a couple of hours into the day, there didn't seem to be a shortage of donors. Nearly 200 boxes had already been collected.

"Well I hope it's a great blessing for them to give as it is to receive," said Barb Demoney, another Collection Center Coordinator. "And so I think as people help out and know that these are going to children all around the world, and I hope they know that they can be blessed by making a difference in a child's life."

Operation Christmas Child has been bringing boxes overseas since 1993. It expects to deliver its 100 millionth box this season. Kids from more than 100 countries all over the world receive the shoe boxes.
