Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Firefighters are still investigating what caused a fire at 4 Oak Drive in Chenango Bridge Sunday morning.

The Chenango Bridge Fire Company responded to the home just after 11 a.m. The fire chief said the homeowner was not home when the fire started. Firefighters said the homeowner discovered the blaze when he arrived back home.

"When we first arrived. the second assistant chief was on the scene trying to assess the situation with heavy smoke coming out of the first floor of the building," First Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Near said. "The crew with the first engine on scene made entry and were able to knock down the fire very quickly and contain it to one room.”

Near says firefighters were able to put out the flames within five to ten minutes and there were no injuries.

Near said the homeowner had been away from the home for about an hour. Because of this, firefighters do not think the fire burned for long.

They also believe the blaze began on the first floor. Near said it looked like it had started in the family room, and smoke had spread throughout the house.

Harpursville, Chenango Bridge, Town of Chenango, and Castle Creek fire stations all responded to the scene.
