Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Democratic Congressional Candidate Dan Lamb spoke with Binghamton University students about student loans, and how they could be more affordable.

Lamb says he's in support of not only protecting the availability of student funding, but raising it.

According to Binghamton University, in the last academic year more than half of its students relied on borrowed dollars to finance their educations.

Lamb says Republican Richard Hanna voted to reduce Pell Grant funding by $170 billion.

"What this means is the lowest income people are the ones who get hurt the most. 74 percent of the people who secure the Pell grant so their students can go to college make less than $30,000," said Lamb.

Action News reached out to Republican Congressional incumbent Richard Hanna's representative who released this statement: "He is a strong supporter of Pell Grants so students in need can attend great colleges like Binghamton University. He wants to make sure the program is on a sustainable path to be available for lower-income students in years ahead."
