(WBNG Binghamton) Prisoners will soon be given the opportunity to earn a college degree.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a new initiative Sunday to provide college classes in some of New York's prisons.

Cuomo said studies show investing in college educations for prisoners reduces their chances of ending up behind bars again, saving tax dollars on incarceration costs.

The program will provide the classes at ten state prisons, one in each region of the state.

The state will start communicating with educational associations that provide professors and classes in the beginning of March.

Cuomo said both associates and bachelor's degrees are possible.
