Johnson City (WBNG Binghamton) -- The line started before the event did. Friends and Company's second annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser didn't begin until noon, but people started arriving an hour beforehand.
"People are just really into it this year," said Keith Johnson, owner of the salon. "The energy is really wonderful. It is bigger, people are more involved, we added a lot more stuff to it."
Patrons could get their hair cut for $20 and had the option of getting pink hair extensions.
"This is a very special month for breast cancer and a lot of people near and dear to us have died from breast cancer and we're all here in support of it," said Mary Ann Hrywnak, CEO of the SAS Foundation for Cancer Research Inc., which received this year's proceeds. "I think everybody feels helpless when somebody is told they have breast cancer and this is everybody's way of just getting together and helping out.
Last year's proceeds went to Tracy's Hope. The salon brought in $1,500 at last year's event. This year, Johnson says the goal is an "ambitious" $5,000.
"It's our way as a hairstylist to be able to give back to our community and it helps a lot of women and breast cancer awareness, we all know someone who is affected by it," he said. "You can't talk to one person without saying, their mother, their aunt, their sister have been touched by cancer in one way or another."
