Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Started by a mother with a son serving in Afghanistan, a group has decided to brighten up the holidays for our troops overseas with a something sweet.

After remembering that her son loved her baking, Gina Rought and her friends put together the Cookies for Troops event.

When the Ground Round in Johnson City heard about the idea they wanted to help.

The restaurant donated their space, some cookies, and an incentive. Everyone who donated cookies received $5 gift cards to the restaurant.

"It's been wonderful. It's been fabulous. The generosity of the public has just been overwhelming," said Rought.

The cookies will then be packed up and shipped overseas to the soldiers, sending them a piece of the holidays and support from home.
