Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A Broome County lawyer is vying for an open family court judge seat. Stephen Cornwell announced his candidacy Thursday night.

The Republican said he hopes to make a big improvement in the county and stand up for the children.

"I truly believe that family court judge is the most important position that will be on the ballot this fall. The kids, the future, all rest with these children and they have never had it harder than they have it today," Cornwell said.

Currently, Cornwell practices family law for the Supreme Court.

He has 10 years experience in family court, criminal and Supreme Court.

"I have the energy, the new ideas, and the vision to change family court for the better," Cornwell said, "to make it better for our children, our families, and for the community and the future."

There will be a Republican primary in September, with the electing vote in November.
