Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Monday afternoon found one less building on Main Street in an effort to eliminate an eyesore and create a safer community.
The former building of Don Owens auto dealership at 2309 E. Main Street has been out of use for years.
Crumbling cinder blocks, a caved-in roof, and unsteady walls have fueled several safety concerns.
"The doors and windows have nothing to be attached to," said Town of Union Supervisor Rose Sotak (R).
Nearly a yard from the sidewalk, Sotak said the biggest worry was sections of the wall collapsing into the street.
"Swerving for a cinder block could cause them to go head on with another car. So it was a very, very serious safety issue," said Sotak.
Demolition costs amounted to just over $38,000. An additional $4,700 allowed for safe removal of asbestos.
The Town of Union said that clearing the property will make the site more appealing for redevelopment, likely for a tax-paying business.
