Whitney Point, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Athletes can mark a new date on the calendar this month as the 9th Annual Broome County Parks Triathlon is set.

The starting line gun will go off at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 28 at Dorchester Park in Whitney Point. The event includes a .5 mile swim, 11.5 mile bike race, and a 5k (3.1 mile) run.

A youth triathlon will follow as a shortened version of the event. This race is open to ages 7-13, and begins at 12:15 p.m.

Youth Race Coordinator Bob Evan first pitched the idea for a youth race four years ago with the belief that the triathlon may potentially inspire children to compete at the international level.

"Triathlon is now an Olympic sport," said Evan. "This could be a segue into, who knows, maybe one of our young youths getting interested in the Olympics."

Evan said people of all ages and athletic abilities are welcome to participate and in past years, athletes young and old have enjoyed the competition, with the youngest competitor only 7-years-old, and the oldest participants over 70.

"Triathletes are dedicated people, and they will travel to a good event," said Director of Parks and Recreation Art Garrison. "So we get people up from Pennsylvania, we get them from all over the general Central New York area, anyone who can basically travel a day's travel will be here."

Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each age group.
