Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) October 16 is recognized as "Shine the Light on Domestic Violence" in New York.
In light of the day, the Democratic Women of Broome County held a forum to talk about domestic violence.
"This is an issue that affects, nationally, 1 in 4 women," Margherita Rossi, president of Democratic Women of Broome County, said. "And locally, some of the statistics, which we found alarming as we were preparing for the event, are that local law enforcement gets 15 to 20 calls a day about domestic violence. That's 500 to 600 incidents a month in our community."
The documentary "Telling Amy's Story" was played for the audience.
It tells the story of a domestic violence homicide.
Following the film, audience members could participate in a round table discussion, involving local law enforcement officials, on how to look for warning signs and lower those daily incidents.
