Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Vestal is at the top of a upstate school district rankings list for the Binghamton-Elmira area.
Business First ranks the district #1 for academic performance.
"I'm very pleased to be able to share the good news of Vestal's ranking, #1 in the area, #22 out of 430 districts in New York state," said Mark LaRoach, Vestal Central Schools Superintendent.
This is the second year Vestal has topped Business First's list for the Binghamton-Elmira area. Business First rates the academic performances of 430 public school districts in Upstate New York (48 counties).
It also divided the ratings into separate standings for eight regions of the state. The academic performance of 39 public school districts in the Binghamton-Elmira area were ranked.
The rankings are based on four years of test data from the State Education department (from 2008-2011).
Superintendent LaRoach says Vestal's ranking is quite the accomplishment but says other municipalities in the area have additional challenges they don't at least right now.
"There are many students in surrounding municipalities that do not have the social economic privilege that some residents of Vestal may have," said Superintendent LaRoach.
LaRoach says he sees his district's demographics changing in the future.
"The challenges will grow and the demographics changing throughout districts in new york so my big concern is that we continue to work hard to help students succeed and we're cognizant of the fact that challenges are going to increase throughout the next few years," he said, "We need to understand there are often times families that face challenges that middle class or upper middle class populations do not face. This is the reality. We need to be ready and able to assist those that need an extra boost."
"Business First" included school districts in Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Delaware and Tioga counties as part of the Binghamton-Elmira area.
