Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) UPDATED 6:00pm
A late night stabbing in Binghamton leaves one man dead and another behind bars.

This after a dispute between the two over a woman.

People who live at 198 Court Street are trying to cope with a tragedy that took place just before midnight.

25 year old Jamel Young is accused of murdering 24 year old Justin Soboleski.

The two knew each other and were apparently fighting over another woman inside Young's apartment.

24 year old Soboleski is described by some as an average guy and not a bad person.

People who knew him tell Action News he was trying to get his life back together, and just started a new job at Felchar Manufacturing.

But his chance at a new direction in life ended late Wednesday night.

"At 11:56 PM last night the Binghamton Police Department received a call that there'd been a stabbing at 198 Court Street," said Binghamton Police Chief, Joe Zikuski at a press conference Thursday morning.

Doris Harris lives in the building and saw much of what happened.

"The victim was being held by a friend of the attacker. He was in a head lock so tight that his sister said he couldn't breathe. If he wasn't in that head lock, he wouldn't have been stabbed," she said.

Investigators say Soboleski had gotten into a fight with 25 year old Jamel Young, who was aggressively flirting with a woman inside Young's apartment.

People inside the apartment at the time broke the fight up.

But when Soboleski left, Young followed him outside into the hallway where witnesses say Soboleski was stabbed three times.

"Holding his chest and his stomach. He sat down and then went backwards. Once he went backwards my girlfriend went upstairs, grabbing a sheet trying to apply as much pressure to his wounds and quickly tried to save his life," she described.

Soboleski was rushed to Wilson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"It's very unfortunate that this happened. At this time I don't think we have any evidence that there were any drugs or alcohol involved. It was a dispute that escalated to a very unfortunate incident," said Zikuski.

Chief Zikuski went on to say that police have responded numerous times to calls from the building from domestic disputes to code violations.

Young is being charged with second degree murder and being held at the Broome County Jail without bail.

This is the third murder in the city this year.
