Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The 45th annual Johnson City Field Days are this weekend at Northside Park.
The park was completely under water during the 2011 floods. Village officials say the weekend is a celebration of how far they've come since then.
"To have it here again this year shows we've recovered from the flood. Obviously we lost most of Field Days due to the flood," said Diane Salva, Johnson City Celebration Committee, "For the community, it's that community event that just shows your small town spirit and it's important to have things like this to show we're still here. We're still strong. We're not going anywhere."
This is the 45th annual Johnson City Field Days. It runs Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3 at Northside Park on Harry L. Drive. There are rides, games, food and live entertainment sponsored by Wegmans.
The park was under nearly twelve feet of water after the floods, according to Mike Sherba, Department of Public Works. Flooding happened right after the 2011 Field Days. It also caused heavy damage to the concession stands at the Park.
Village DPW and Parks crews along with volunteers have been working to get the park back in shape.
"Thanks to BOCES and our DPW department, BOCES secured a huge grant to help rebuild the buildings and put a lot of work into this to get it back up and functioning especially just for the baseball season alone, so we can have Field Days again this year," said Greg Deemie (R), Village of Johnson City Mayor.
"Work is about 98 percent complete here at the park. We've been working on little things up to today. The ground has settled here. The buildings were re-done. The volunteers that came in really helped the Village out, painting the buildings and getting everything back into shape," said Sherba.
There is no admission fee for Johnson City Field Days. All weekend rides are $1.50 each or buy 10 rides for $13.00. Saturday is Kids Day at the Field Days from 1-4 p.m. You can get four rides for $4.00.
