Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Hundreds of kids in Binghamton are spending the summer learning life lessons and healthy lifestyles by playing golf.

The First Tee Program took place at Recreation Park Friday morning. Young kids learned leadership, dedication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

More than 800 students are participating this summer, but it will expand to more than 2,000 this fall when the program becomes integrated within the Binghamton school system.

Binghamton Mayor Rich David (R) said getting students to become active at a young age may prevent them from getting into trouble when they are older.

“If we don’t reach our children early, eventually when they become adults, there is the potential for problems when they graduate from high school or even during high school," David said.

The program is able to operate due to a donation of $5,000 from Dick's Sporting Goods.
