Whitney Point, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Deputies accused the treasurer of a local fire company of stealing tens of thousands of dollars.

Members of the Broome County Sheriff's Office took Terry Gow, 58, of Whitney Point into custody on Wednesday.

According to the sheriff's office Gow was the former treasurer of the Glen Aubrey Fire Company and embezzled roughly $30,000 which she used for personal expenses.

The sheriff's office says this is becoming more common within small organizations or businesses.

"Have an annual audit done by an independent party. Part of the Board of Directors job is to watch the money, keeping finances at the place of business not at someone's home so they can go back and look at bank accounts and check books," said Detective Sergeant Jason Ellis.

She was arraigned in Nanticoke Town Court on felony grand larceny in the third degree.

She was released pending further court action.
