Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Greater Binghamton Airport recently received a grant of about $1 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Representative Richard Hanna said at a press conference that this airport is crucial to the local economy and that's why they got the grant.

The grant will mainly be used to upgrade hangers, some of which have been deemed unsafe.

However Binghamton Airport Commissioner of Aviation Carl Beardsley said the average flier will also notice some upgrades.

"They're going to see us maintain the safety levels that we have. And they're going to see a very cleaned up, fresh, new area when they're de-icing over on the North Apron," said Beardsley.

Also in attendance was U.S. Transportation Committee Chairman John Mica, who is originally a Binghamton resident.
