Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A regional commission gives a big grant to help secure operations for a proposed indoor farmers market in Broome County.
The Appalachian Regional Commission granted more than $112,000 towards the Southern Tier Regional Farmers Market.
The grant will help keep the market up and running after it is built.
The indoor market will be located in Ostiningo Park, with hopes to be open year-round.
"We can grow it locally, we can buy it locally, we eat it here, it's healthy. It's supporting our farmers," Broome County Executive Debbie Preston (R) said.
The ARC and Broome County say having a year-round market will help boost the county's local food economy.
The Southern Tier Regional Farmers Market is expected have $3-million impact on the region in its first year and a half.
Preston says there will be a ground breaking in August and the market will open next summer.
