Volunteers of America and the YWCA in Binghamton recently received grant money through the federal Emergency Shelter Grant Fund.
Volunteers of America was awarded nearly $31,000 and the YWCA approximately $36,000.
Now, eve An more money could be on its, way and both shelters will have more time to spend it.
Volunteers of America could see up to $101,000 and the YWCA could see up to about $47,000.
Officials with Binghamton's Planning, Housing and Community Development say this money is badly needed.
"With federal funding cuts and state funding as well, it's important to these agencies, more than ever, to have these additional resources to assist the homeless population, which continues to be present in Broome County," said Jennifer Taylor, Planning, Housing and Community Development grants administrator.
City Council plans to vote on the increase sometime during the next two weeks.
