Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Women's Fund of the Community Foundation of South Central New York held its annual breakfast at the Binghamton Club on Thursday.
Jennifer Wegmann was this year's keynote speaker. She is a lecturer at Binghamton University in the Health and Wellness Studies program.
"Start at a young age fostering self esteem and self worth," she said, "Also start at a young age giving girls the tools to navigate the media, navigate our society and the messages that are being sent."
Wegmann says there can be fallout and issues that develop from these messages, but over the years, resources to deal with it have grown.
"There's more people talking about it now. There's more dialogue going on in schools and families. It's necessary to combat the messages that girls are seeing" said Wegmann.
The Women's Fund of the Community Foundation of South Central New York serves five counties including Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego and Tioga.
The Women's Fund has spread $66,000 in grants across more than 35 projects and programs at nonprofit agencies in the region.
