Maine, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Saturday was Flag Day, and in honor of the national holiday, local veterans honored old and tattered American flags by burning them.

Dozens came out to the annual Flag Burning Service at the American Legion Post 1390 in the town of Maine.

Flags of all sizes, that have been tattered and over-aged, were placed in a fire pit all together.

Mike VanOrder, vice chairman of American Legion 1390, said burning the flags is a deserving right and it is not only a way to honor the flag, but also honor American veterans.

"We the Americans deserve that flag flying over our head for all the anguish and conflicts and everything that we have fought for to remain and stay free," VanOrder said.

VanOrder said the ritual of honoring flags by burning them has been going on at American Legions across the country since 1919.
