Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Dozens of balloons were released Tuesday night in honor of victims of rape, sexual assault and domestic abuse.
This is Crime Victim's Rights Week.
The week is dedicated to supporting the survivors and remember those who died.
"These things unfortunately aren't going to stop, so we need to sort of prepare for the next one by being there for each other and providing that support," said Raini Baudendistel, executive director of the Crime Victims Assistance Center.
Tuesday night, dozens of people met in Ostiningo Park to comfort each other and discuss where they are in their healing process.
There were speakers, singers and a balloon release as a way to let go.
"I think it's really important to acknowledge where each of us are in the process of healing and really focus on how we can move forward and build resilience for ourselves and our community," said Baudendistel.
This month is also Child Abuse Prevention Month.
For the rest of April, blue pinwheels will be placed into the ground outside of the Crime Victim's Assistance Center.
There will be one pinwheel for each child that was abused in our area this past year.
That number is 340.
