Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) All tenants are accounted for after a fire breaks out in a Binghamton building.
Fire crews responded to a call at 44 Griswold Street around 4 this afternoon.
Initial scanner reports indicated a child was trapped on the second floor.
However, a search of the building confirmed that the child was not trapped inside.
Several people who got out of the building suffered from smoke inhalation.
Fire officials say most of the smoke was coming from the lower level of the building.
"We made a very aggressive attack and knocked the fire down very quickly. But besides the size of the building, and the conditions that we originally had here, certainly the heat of the day is adding to it," says Dan Thomas, Binghamton Fire Chief.
The Red Cross was also called to the scene to assist the 9 adults and 9 children living in the building.
The fire is believed to have started in the downstairs' apartment kitchen.
An exact cause is still under investigation.
