Kirkwood, NY (WBNG Binghamton) If you haven't see them yet, construction zones may soon pop up along your daily commute. Regional leaders are reminding motorists to slow down and keep alert when traveling through work zones.
The New York State Department of Transportation said drivers need to stay off their phones, slow down and pay attention to where they are driving and what's around them.
"You need to concentrate entirely on your driving and watch because the other motorists in front of you may not know what they're doing," said Broome County Sheriff David Harder (R).
Regional construction and contractors said drivers need to stay aware because construction workers are only feet away from moving vehicles.
"It is a very dangerous situation. They almost risk their lives and well-being every day," said a member of the Highway Board of Directors for Region 9 Nicholas DeVincentis.
DeVincentis added that last year 40 percent of all construction contractors reported accidents in their work zones.
Last year in New York, four construction workers died while on the job.
NYSDOT said more construction will be popping up throughout the area.
