Vestal, NY (WBNG-Binghamton) Locally owned independent restaurants are trying to help people "keep it local" in our area.

The Southern Tier Independent Restaurants, or STIR, is a group of 26 restaurants that are locally owned in Greater Binghamton. Almost 90 percent of the revenue from these restaurants are put back into the community by using other local businesses, vendors, suppliers, and professional services.

Many of these restaurants hold community events, donate to local charities, and buy local grown product as well. They want people to know that by eating at their restaurants you are not only helping the business but the local economy as well.

"We want to continue to help the community but in order to do so we need their support too, so we want to try to encourage people to eat local, stay local," said Rick Dodd, Co-Founder of STIR

"It's nice to have a locally owned restaurant and have somewhere to go where people can become familiar and support you on a regular basis. That enables us to be able to collect, donate, and give back to our community," said Jen Winsor, Manager at California Grill
