Lanes Open on I-81 After Crash (With Photos)

Kirkwood, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Broome County Sheriff's office said one driver was injured in three tractor trailer pile up on Interstate 81 South in Kirkwood.

Deputies said Andrew High from Ontario, Canada drove a tractor trailer hauling canned goods. He ran into the back of another tractor trailer hauling vehicles around 5:40 a.m.

An SUV on the car carrier came loose and three other SUV's burst into flame.

The second tractor trailer also ran into a third tractor trailer and sheared open its fuel tank. There was a significant spill of diesel fuel.

High's tractor trailer also caught fire and ended up partially in the median. He was taken to Wilson Hospital for treatment of a head injury and cuts.

The Broome Sheriff's Office ticketed High for Following Too Closely. It adds further charges may be filed at a later date.

Interstate 81 south was closed for more than three hours before opening two lanes of traffic. Clean-up was expected to last throughout Tuesday.
