(WBNG Binghamton) All week Action News has been profiling girls who have stepped up in the community. As part of WBNG's upcoming Girl's World Expo,we received dozens of nominations for the Van Cott Girls of Merit 2012.
Thursday, we feature 7th grader Ella Rockwell, who in her 12 years has touched the hearts of hundreds.
"I just do these things out of love," said Rockwell.
12-year old Ella Rockwell loves to lend a helping hand, always putting others above herself.
"During the flood last year, my area of the town was pretty badly effected. We went out and bought cases of water bottles. I went around a wagon and handed out water bottles, goodies and treats,"said Rockwell.
She went out of her way to supply what her neighbors needed, all with a smile on her face.
"I got many thank yous and a lot of gratitude because of it. It made me feel very good," said Rockwell.
It's those 'Thank Yous' that drive her to do more.
"During the Dick's Open, I set up a stand in front of my house, selling cupcakes for 50 cents each"said Rockwell. All of that money was then donated to the Ronald McDonald House. "If I was a child in the hospital, I would really need my parents there to help me through these hard times," said Rockwell.
On top of giving back to the community, local charities and her Church Youth Group, Rockwell goes to school like other kids her age.
"During my free time I am in the Union Endicott marching band, also in my Jennie F. Snapp school production of seussical," said Rockwell.
Topping off the list, Rockwell does sign language interpretation.
While volunteering at the beat of her own drum, she's not looking for thanks.
"I feel like I don't need an award to tell me that I do the right things but it feels so nice to know that other people notice,"said Rockwell. Looking towards the future, she knows all of her hard work will pay off.
"People can see I care about my community and my community is a big part of me,"said Rockwell.
10 outstanding ladies were picked as Van Cott Girls of Merit 2012.
WBNG's Girls World Expo is this Sunday, October 21st at the Binghamton Riverwalk Hotel and Conference Center.
