Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A workshop was held Thursday evening to show local business owners the value of social media.
More and more companies and organizations are turning to social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest to build their customer base.
Statistics have shown that these websites have proved successful for many businesses and have helped grow the number of loyal customers to a brand.
"Most people are online and most people do have Internet, in fact, 28 percent of time spent online is on social media," noted Tara Schneider, president of Binghamton Encatus.
She explained that by simply "liking" a picture or post on Facebook, it will show up in your friends' newsfeeds, which will usually lead to more "likes," comments, and shares. This circulates information in posts and photos very quickly with almost no effort.
Panelists at the workshop said that this chain of events can undoubtedly help promote products and services just as easily as it can share your family's Christmas photos.
Christopher Olsen, co-owner of his own business, RS WebWorks, said that many companies in larger cities have been utilizing the social media tool for quite some time, and with successful results.
"In large markets like New York City, Philadelphia, all of those businesses already have a Facebook profile, they have hundreds or thousands of likes, and they’re already built up. In Binghamton, most businesses are not doing it to any real solid extent, but they're still going to have plenty of time to get in there and utilize these tools," he said.
The workshop covered everything from setting up an account to learning about specific algorithms and strategies to reach more people.
