Binghamton, NY ( WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton first responders rescued a man dangling off the Washington Street bridge.

The call came in around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Responders found a man holding onto the support beam of the bridge when they arrived.

Rescuers were able to hold onto the man and tie a rope around his ankle.

But then the man lost his grip and was dangling upside down.
Crews lowered the man down to the water where boats were stationed to pick him up.

This type of rescue is something that Binghamton first responders train for.

"Each situation is different and can be different, but that's why we train," said Binghamton Fire Chief, Daniel Thomas, "That's why we want people to be thinking, thinking on their feet, and doing what they can to have a successful outcome."

The man was taken to the hospital.

It's not known how he ended up over the bridge in the first place.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
