Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Tioga County Fair is back. After being devastated by September's floods, crews worked hard to get the grounds up to par.
Opening day of the Tioga County fair looks a little different this year.
The grandstand and track area is still closed after September's Flood.
This brings the attention to the animals.
"I think that's where the attention should be first anyway. It's really about the community and the events in the community, the carnival is just an extra anyway," said Clover Perrotta, President of the Tioga County Fair Board.
There is not a carnival ride in sight, but there is an exotic animal exhibit.
The owner is from South Carolina and was happy to come back this year, regardless of the rides.
"This is the tradition, this is what fairs are all about, the agricultural part," said Mark Nispet, owner of Eudora Farms.
The 4-H Club has stations set up all over the fairgrounds.
Children work all year long on projects to be shown at the county fair.
"This has been a real morale booster. The kids were real concerned we weren't going to have any kind of an event and we've been promising them that we would do something," said Autumn Lavine, 4-H Youth Development Resource Educator.
Something that still looks familiar at the Tioga County Fair is the 4-H Livestock building. It turns out this year it's one of the main attractions.
"I worked with her a lot and got her ready for the fair. She was spunky at first but I got her nice and calm," said Megan Henry of Candor.
This is Megan's second time showing at the fair.
Last year she won first place, and this year she is just glad to be back.
"I feel really happy and excited about it," said Henry.
The fair board president does expect the turnout to be lower this year, but says the main focus was on making sure the fair happened.
"A set back is a set up for a come back, and we're coming back," said Perrotta.
Until the entire area is ready to open, the visitors will be kept busy with the animals.
The Tioga County Fair runs through Saturday.
They're having a special event each night. A Paddle Party on Tuesday night, a Tim McGraw tribute on Wednesday, local bands playing on Thursday night, a square dance on Friday and more local bands on Saturday.
