Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) With summer comes strawberries, and with strawberries comes Owego's annual festival.
The Strawberry Fest kicked off Friday night for the 34th time, and the streets were packed.
Thousands are expected in the village streets this weekend, which have been transformed into a fair-like setting with vendors, games and of course, food.
With strawberries taking center stage at the event, most people were found with shortcake, shakes and even kettlecorn -- all flavored with the red berry.
"The strawberries are the most important," said Owego resident Susie Hall.
For those who were ready for a change of flavor, there was more on the menu.
"They have gyros, lemonade, funnel cakes, fair food and all kinds of really delicious food. Maybe not healthy, but so good." laughed Alia Farley.
While it was Farley's first time at the festival, she said it makes sense why it is one of the village's most cherished events.
"Bringing unity to everything by having everybody get together and just show their support and pride for their town. To feel welcome in an open environment like this is great," said Farley.
Friday night's event also included live music and 5K races, capped off with a fireworks display.
The festival will run Saturday from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m.
