Newfoundland, PA (WBNG Binghamton) Pennsylvania State Police arrest a man on a charge of homicide after his wife is shot and killed Sunday.

Troopers responded to the home of Bertrand Schroeder, 59, and Donna Schroeder, 51, at 143 Haags Lane where the shooting was reported at 12:42 am Sunday.

Donna Schroeder was transported to CMC Hospital in Scranton where she died from a gunshot wound.

Bertrand Schroeder told investigators he had been drinking and that he was attempting to unload a 22 rifle when it went off.

At a later point investigators say he told them he did pull the trigger but maintained his wife was accidentally shot.

Schroeder also admitted that the two had been arguing earlier that day, and that arguments had become physical in the past, and on a prior occasion he had pointed a loaded gun at his wife.

Police say the man has an extensive criminal history including aggravated assault and several other felony convictions.

Schroeder was not allowed to posses any firearms due to those previous charges.

He's charged with one count of criminal homicide.
