Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A local organization is pairing up Johnson City children with free bicycles before their summer vacations begin.

The George F. Johnson Dream Center hosted its 6th annual bike day.

The event hands out bikes to any child that promises to wear a helmet.

Organizers collect old bikes year round that get reconditioned. Then organizers spread the word about bike safety before letting the kids pedal away.

The program director says during the summer months, she sees lots of families out riding bikes and joining community programs.

"All these people were on bikes and I thought, you know what, they had big smiles on their faces," said Patricia Cardin of the George F. Johnson Dream Center. "I saw families riding together, and even if they were adults they looked like little kids, they were doing figure 8's and really enjoying their bikes and that is really rewarding here."

The partnership has given away more than 700 reconditioned bikes to families and children.

When the event started six years ago, they had about 60 kids show up and this year they gave out close to 200 bicycles.
