Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) SUNY Broome students are getting ready to graduate in just a few weeks, but first, some of them had a project that put them in a real-life disaster situation.
More than 100 students participated in SUNY Broome's third annual Mock Environmental Exposure Disaster Event on Friday afternoon.
In the fake drill, 33 victims were either killed or injured when a drunk driver drove into campus.
"Many of them will be graduating within two weeks and this really helps them understand what drills are like, what disasters are like and what is happening now in the community and in the world," said chairwoman of Medical Assisting and Health Studies Erin O'Hara-Leslie.
In the drill, the 'drunk driver' was also found with drugs to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence.
More than 100 SUNY Broome students participated.
The 'victims' were students in the theater program, volunteers and underclassmen.
O'Hara-Leslie said it took more than a year to create the drill.
